A long-dormant plan to build a Las Vegas-style hotel and casino near Oakland International Airport is now officially dead.
The plan was opposed by the cities of Oakland, Alameda, Berkeley and San Leandro, as well as those against bringing gambling so close to the heart of the Bay Area.
On Monday, the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs announced in the federal register the decision to cancel work on an environmental review of the casino proposal. Koi Nation is a landless tribe with about 50 members of mostly Pomo descent. Two tribes still have pending applications for casinos in the East Bay. The Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians wants to build one in unincorporated North Richmond, and the Guidiville Band of Pomo Indians has proposed one at Point Molate.
